How much does card grading cost in 2026?
NEOSMITH HOBBY • SEPTEMBER 2026 • 6 MIN READ
Grading can turn a $40 raw card into a $400 slab — or turn a $40 raw card into a $40 card minus $30 in fees. The difference is knowing what the tiers actually cost and when submitting makes sense. Here's the honest breakdown for 2026.
The three graders that matter
For Pokémon, One Piece, and Dragon Ball, three names dominate: PSA (the resale-value king, especially at gem-mint 10), CGC (respected, often cheaper to submit), and Beckett / BGS (beloved for its sub-grades and pristine 10s). All three use the same basic model: you declare your card's value, pick a service tier, and pay per card.
What the tiers typically cost
Exact prices shift year to year, so treat these as the shape of the 2026 landscape — and confirm current numbers on each grader's official site before you submit:
| Tier | Typical 2026 range | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Value / Economy | ~$20–$30 per card | Cards with declared value under ~$500; slowest turnaround |
| Regular / Standard | ~$40–$75+ per card | Mid-range declared values; moderate turnaround |
| Express / Premium | $100+ per card | High-value cards; fastest turnaround |
Declared value is the key variable: under-declare and you risk the grader bumping your tier (and your bill); over-declare and you're paying for speed and insurance you don't need.
The costs nobody mentions up front
- Shipping both ways — insured shipping to the grader and back. For a single high-value card, this alone can add $15–$40+.
- Supplies — penny sleeves, semi-rigids or card savers, team bags. Pennies per card, but they add up across a submission.
- Prep / intake fees — if you use a prep service (like ours), there's a per-card fee for inspection, cleaning, and submission handling.
- The re-grade risk — a card that comes back an 8 instead of a 10 didn't just miss the premium; it consumed the full fee anyway.
DO THE MATH BEFORE YOU SUBMIT
Submission math: (graded sale price at your realistic grade − raw sale price) must exceed (grader fee + shipping + prep). If it doesn't, keep the card raw.
Example: a card worth $40 raw and ~$90 as a PSA 9. Fee $25 + shipping share $8 + prep = ~$38 in costs for ~$50 in upside. Thin — but reasonable if you're confident in the 9. If the realistic grade is an 8 worth $55, you just paid $38 to lose money.
Turnaround: the hidden price
Value tiers commonly quote several weeks to a few months door-to-door, depending on backlog. Express tiers measure in days to weeks. Here's the strategic bit most collectors miss: a PSA 9 back in your hands in three weeks often beats a PSA 10 that takes four months — markets move, and capital tied up in a grading queue isn't working for you.
When grading is worth it
- High-value chase cards in visibly gem-mint condition — the premium for a 10 justifies the fee.
- Cards you plan to keep long-term — authentication and preservation have value beyond resale.
- Japanese cards with sharp print quality — Japanese print runs are famously clean, which helps, but centering and edges still decide everything.
When to keep it raw
- Low-value bulk — the fee eats the entire upside.
- Cards with visible edge whitening, soft corners, or off-centering you can see without magnification — the grade won't surprise you upward.
- When you need the cash soon — grading locks up both the card and the fee for weeks.
A NOTE ON PRICING
Grader fees and turnaround times change. The ranges above reflect typically published 2026 tiers — always confirm current pricing at psacard.com, cgcgrading.com, or beckett.com before submitting.
What a prep service actually does for you
Pre-screening is the unglamorous part that saves the most money: inspecting centering, edges, corners, and surface under proper light; cleaning safely; choosing the right tier and grader for each card; and handling the paperwork, packing, and submission. The cards that shouldn't be submitted never cost you a grader fee. Here's how our prep process works →
